The parts, in order
- Teil 1A: Präsentation — about 4 minutes
- Teil 1B: Zusammenfassung und Anschlussfragen — about 3 minutes
- Teil 2: Diskussion — about 6 minutes
Die Zeit für das Prüfungsgespräch verteilt sich folgendermaßen auf die drei Testteile: Teil 1A (Präsentation) sollte circa 3–4 Minuten dauern, Teil 1B (Beantwortung der Anschlussfragen) circa 2–3 Minuten und Teil 2 (Diskussion) circa 6 Minuten.
Die Teilnehmerinnen bzw. Teilnehmer erhalten unterschiedliche Aufgabenblätter für Teil 1A (Präsentation).
Your partner, and how much they affect you
The exam centre decides who you are paired with — you cannot choose, and you will usually meet them minutes beforehand. You cannot agree a strategy in advance either: an invigilator has to ensure candidates do not talk to each other during the preparation time. What protects you is not that your partner is irrelevant. It is that the examiner is instructed to intervene: if a candidate falters, or takes over the conversation too much, the interlocutor is required to step in with prompts. So a dominant partner does cost you something, and the examiner is supposed to correct for it. Your own job is to take your turn deliberately rather than talk over them: ask a direct question, then answer it yourself at length.

Who marks you
Two examiners, not one. Each records an assessment independently while you speak, on their own sheet. Your result is then the average of the two — for this exam the examiners are not required to arrive at one shared verdict. The exact procedure differs between exams, which is why the official wording is quoted below rather than summarised.
Während des Prüfungsgesprächs steht den Prüferinnen bzw. Prüfern der Bewertungsbogen M10 zur Verfügung. Darauf halten sie unabhängig voneinander ihre jeweiligen Bewertungen fest.
Doch müssen sich die Prüferinnen bzw. Prüfer nicht auf eine einheitliche Bewertung einigen. Die individuellen Bewertungen werden abschließend auf den Antwortbogen S30 übertragen. Für die Endbewertung wird in der telc Zentrale das arithmetische Mittel errechnet.
Preparation
Vor der Prüfung stehen 20 Minuten Zeit für die Vorbereitung der Präsentation zur Verfügung.
Die Teilnehmerinnen bzw. Teilnehmer dürfen Notizen machen, aber nicht miteinander sprechen. Die Benutzung von Wörterbüchern ist nicht gestattet.
If nobody is paired with you
Die Einzelprüfung ist entsprechend kürzer, die auch mögliche Dreierprüfung entsprechend länger.
Careful: a similar exam, a different format
Exams with almost the same name do not share a speaking format. The differences below are real, and turning up prepared for the wrong one is a common way to lose marks.
