Bei der Mündlichen Prüfung ist für eine Paarprüfung eine Dauer von ca. 15 Minuten und für eine Prüfung mit drei Teilnehmenden eine Dauer von ca. 25 Minuten vorgesehen.
Your partner, and how much they affect you
The exam centre decides who you are paired with — you cannot choose, and you will usually meet them minutes beforehand. You cannot agree a strategy in advance either: an invigilator has to ensure candidates do not talk to each other during the preparation time. What protects you is not that your partner is irrelevant. It is that the examiner is instructed to intervene: if a candidate falters, or takes over the conversation too much, the interlocutor is required to step in with prompts. So a dominant partner does cost you something, and the examiner is supposed to correct for it. Your own job is to take your turn deliberately rather than talk over them: ask a direct question, then answer it yourself at length.
Die bzw. der Prüfungsverantwortliche entscheidet über die geeignete Zusammensetzung der Prüfungsgruppen.
Er schreitet nur dann ein, wenn eine oder einer der Teilnehmenden im Gespräch zu stark dominiert oder sich nicht aktiv beteiligt. In diesem Fall spricht er die Teilnehmerin bzw. den Teilnehmer mit dem geringeren Redeanteil direkt an, um sie oder ihn in das Gespräch einzubeziehen.
Wenn die Teilnehmenden während der Prüfung ins Stocken kommen oder den Redebeitrag abbrechen, gibt der Interlokutor Gesprächsimpulse.
Who marks you
Two examiners, not one. Each has their own rating sheet and records an assessment independently while you speak. After you leave the room they compare their marks and agree a single final mark, which is entered on your own answer sheet. The exact procedure differs between exams, which is why the official wording is quoted below rather than summarised.
Während des Prüfungsgesprächs steht beiden Prüfenden je ein Bewertungsbogen M10 zur Verfügung, auf dem sie ihre jeweiligen Bewertungen festhalten. Die drei Prüfungsteile werden unabhängig voneinander nach den vier Bewertungskriterien für den Mündlichen Ausdruck bewertet.
Preparation
Da jeweils eine Vorbereitungszeit von 20 Minuten vor der Prüfung vorgesehen ist, sind für das erste Paar 20 Minuten einzuplanen, bevor die Prüfung beginnt.
Es sind jedoch keine festen Themen vorgegeben. Dieser Teil der Prüfung wird nicht bewertet.
If nobody is paired with you
This surprises people, so it is worth knowing in advance: if you are the only candidate, or there is an odd number, the exam may be held as a single exam — and one of the two examiners then plays the part of the second candidate. It is not a favour and it is not a problem. It is the documented procedure.
Meldet sich nur eine Person zur Prüfung an, darf eine Einzelprüfung abgenommen werden. In diesem Fall übernimmt eine bzw. einer der beiden Prüfenden die Rolle der bzw. des zweiten Prüfungsteilnehmenden.
Careful: a similar exam, a different format
Exams with almost the same name do not share a speaking format. The differences below are real, and turning up prepared for the wrong one is a common way to lose marks.
