Your partner, and how much they affect you
The exam centre decides who you are paired with — you cannot choose, and you will usually meet them minutes beforehand. You cannot agree a strategy in advance either: an invigilator has to ensure candidates do not talk to each other during the preparation time. What protects you is not that your partner is irrelevant. It is that the examiner is instructed to intervene: if a candidate falters, or takes over the conversation too much, the interlocutor is required to step in with prompts. So a dominant partner does cost you something, and the examiner is supposed to correct for it. Your own job is to take your turn deliberately rather than talk over them: ask a direct question, then answer it yourself at length.
Das Modul SPRECHEN wird in der Regel als Paarprüfung durchgeführt, in Ausnahmefällen ist auch eine Einzelprüfung möglich. Eine Paarprüfung dauert circa 15 Minuten, eine Einzelprüfung dauert circa 10 Minuten.
Die Zusammenstellung der Teilnehmenden der Paarprüfung erfolgt nach dem Zufallsprinzip.
Who marks you
Two examiners, not one. Each records an assessment independently while you speak, on their own sheet. Your result is then the average of the two — for this exam the examiners are not required to arrive at one shared verdict. The exact procedure differs between exams, which is why the official wording is quoted below rather than summarised.
Beide Prüfenden machen Notizen und bewerten die Prüfungsleistungen unabhängig voneinander.
Die Teile 1 bis 3 zur mündlichen Produktion werden von zwei Prüfenden getrennt bewertet. Das Einleitungsgespräch wird nicht bewertet. Zur Ermittlung des Ergebnisses des Moduls SPRECHEN wird aus beiden Bewertungen das arithmetische Mittel gezogen und auf volle Punkte gerundet (bis 0,49 wird abgerundet, ab 0,5 wird aufgerundet).
Ein Modul ist bestanden, wenn mindestens 60 Punkte bzw. 60 % erreicht sind.
Preparation
Zur Vorbereitung auf die mündliche Prüfung erhalten die Teilnehmenden sowohl für die Paar- als auch für die Einzelprüfung 15 Minuten Zeit.
If nobody is paired with you
Im Fall einer Einzelprüfung übernimmt eine/-r der Prüfenden die Rolle des Gesprächspartners/der Gesprächspartnerin.
Careful: a similar exam, a different format
Exams with almost the same name do not share a speaking format. The differences below are real, and turning up prepared for the wrong one is a common way to lose marks.
